They are a team that has allowed just 24 points in six games this season.
In case you were wondering, that is the fewest points allowed by any team in Class 6-4A in Kansas.
They are also a team that has scored 266 points in six games this season.
By the way, that ranks tops among all Kansas schools in Class 6-4A.
That same team just happens to be traveling to Pittsburg on Friday night to take on the Dragons in the opening of the Class 5A District 4 playoffs.
No. 1-ranked Gardner-Edgerton boasts one of the best offenses and defenses in the state and will be taking on Pittsburg, a team that has made close games a matter of nature over the course of their season.
The Blazers (6-0, 0-0 District) are off a 41-3 pasting of Eudora last week.
Remember, this is the same Eudora team took on Girard two years ago in the Class 4A playoffs.
Needless to say, Gardner made mincemeat out of the Cardinals.
“I, once again, was very pleased by the efforts the boys gave on the field and, once again, we truly had some outstanding performances,†said Gardner head coach Marvin Diener in is weekly football newsletter.
Outstanding performances may be a bit of an understatement.Blazer quarterback Bubba Starling threw for over 150 yards in the first half before leaving the game in the second with an injured ankle.
Starling and running back Taylor Richardson each had 1 rushing touchdown and to top it off, Brett Jensen, the other running back, reached the 100-yard mark on the ground for the second straight game and racked up his seventh touchdown of the season.
Oh, by the way, even though their starting quarterback went down in the second half, wide receiver Isaac Mallory had six catches, three touchdowns and 193 yards receiving.
I think that it is safe to say that the Dragons have not faced an offensive juggernaut quite like that of Gardner-Edgerton.
But, Pittsburg can boast one of the best defenses in the state as well, allowing just 58 points for the season — including just 13 against Andover, a team that hung 63 on Parsons the week before.
On defense, the Blazers allowed just five first downs for Eudora last week and gave up less than 100 yards of total offense.
While Pittsburg has been able to move the ball through the air and on the ground, it may take big effort by the offense to get past a very tough secondary.
Points are going to be at a premium Friday night, but any team can beat any other on any given night.
Or, something like that.
Expect a defensive battle with both offenses being tested perhaps more than they have been all season.
It does not mean that the road for Pittsburg gets easier because a road trip to Ottawa and a final home game against No. 3-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas.
Welcome to district football.
