Interesting second week to prep football season

What a topsy-turvy week in prep football.
It might have been expected that Riverton would be sitting atop the standings of the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League, but the standings are a little surprising after that.
By way of their 36-34 win over St. Mary’s-Colgan at Hutchinson Field Thursday night, the Galena Bulldogs may have picked up the biggest win in school history.
Galena showed poise on defense and held off a late Colgan rally in the fourth quarter to pull off the ‘minor’ upset.
I say minor because, lets be honest, Galena is not a slouch team by any stretch. They showed on Thursday that they can come out and hit you in the mouth.
Another undefeated team in the league is the Baxter Springs Lions. The Lions, after struggling with Pleasanton in their season-opener, came back strong in a 21-6 win at Southeast — giving Baxter two road wins to open up the season.
That means that the Cherokee County portion of the CNC holds the top three places.
Granted, there is still a lot of football left to be played.

SEK LEAGUE ... Friday night’s matchup between Pittsburg and Columbus did not disappoint in being another very exciting game.
The Titans, using a very tough defense, dominated most facets of the game.
However, don’t count out the Pittsburg defense who came up with big plays of their own.
The Dragons forced five Columbus turnovers — two interceptions and three fumbles — but only came away with 10 points.
Make no mistake, the Dragon defense is one of the best in the conference and they showed it by giving their offense great field position in the second half of the Coal Bucket game.
However, a big congratulations goes out to Columbus for winning back the Coal Bucket for the first time since 1973.
It should make for a very exciting matchup the next time the two teams meet.

RECORD-BREAKING ... The game between Parsons and Coffeyville on Friday was nothing short of record-breaking.
The 104 combined points is the most in known league history, or at least since 1962. The previous record was 100 points when Chanute beat Burlington 54-45 in 1994.
It was also the most combined points between league opponents. The old record was 93 when Independence beat Parsons, 72-21 on. Oct. 1, 1976.
Parsons’ 41 points tied for second in the most points scored in a defeat in the SEK League. The most was 42 scored by Independence in a 47-42 loss to Coffeyville on Oct. 25, 2007.
The 41 points was tied for third in the most points allowed in victory. Chanute gave up 46 in a 54-46 win over Burlington in 1994.

MORE RECORDS ... The Parsons-Coffeyville shootout was not the only record-breaker on Friday night.
Independence’s Matt Bromley rushed for a school-record 326 yards aganst Fort Scott. The Bulldogs also had 534 yards rushing as a team — also a school record.
Not only that, but the Bulldogs are also 2-0 on the season, the first time that they have posted that mark since the Kennedy administration.
